A Research on Automated Railway Crossing Alert System using Arduino and Android


Abstract— Accident in railway crossing is still always happen. Sometimes it is caused by the human error or officer of the railway crossing control system. In order to solve the problem, Automated Railway Crossing Alert System using Arduino and Android is proposed. A sensor is located in one point to detect the coming train. When the train is coming, the information will be sent to the railway crossing terminal. Since the system is integrated with the train schedule database, not only terminal will receive the information, but also the road user (motorist and car driver) who used the application in their android will get the information and an alert when they close to the railway crossing. in addition, to other road users, can view the time and direction of arrival at the railway crossing Using this system, the accidents can be reduced.

How the System Works

The system works like this :

  • When the train coming and it is detected by the ultrasonic sensor, the sensor will send the signal to the Android tablet which is installed at the railways crossing guard house. The information sent are the train speed at the point where the sensor is installed and how long the train and its coaches is.
  • Android tablet receives those data and it processes the data. Software designed in the tablet displays the data on the screen in the form that is needed by the guard. It shows the estimated time needed until the train comes at the crossing, the type and the schedule of the train which is retrieved from its database. Once the arrival time is within the tolerance time frame, the tablet will send instructions to Arduino installed in the crossing to control the gate. Within 5 minutes before the train comes Arduino will instructs the motor to close the gate.
  • Besides sending instructions to Arduino, the tablet sends also data to the LED panel. It displays countdown to train arrival in seconds. The purpose is to give the road users information how long they should wait until the train crosses. There is also sirene installed to warn the drivers and motorcyclists that the train is coming.data
  • When the gate is already in closed position, a sensor will send signal to the Android tablet indicating that the gate is closed. When the signal is not received within 1 minute after the instructions are sent, then the gate should be damaged and the guard should close the gate manually.
  • In emergency cases, the gate can be controlled from the control center office through its existing SCADA system. The system can override the ultrasonic sensor and directly switched to SCADA.The whole tablet operations can be controlled through SCADA.
